So Messing around with new coloring on the Newly released Dragons...

The first is Digital Paper piecing, Replaced coloring in Photoshop with colored paper as the fill...Also replaced the Black outline, Might use this for some backgrounds...

Second is Brushes on my Ipad. Got rid of the black outline and filled with colors that it was surrounding... Won't be print quality coming from my ipad. But I could do the same in Photoshop....

Challenge - Birthday

Do we HAVE to grow up? Can we not just sit around and play all day? I know I don't want to grow up! Well here is our challenge this week celebrating "growing up"....yup, you got it...Dustin Pike has a birthday. He is now 12. Make a card with a birthday theme using one of the Doodledragon Images. Just attach it using Mr. Inlinkz and you too could win a goodie. Be sure and check back to see if your a winner. We pick a "Pikes Pick" winner as well as a random winner every challenge. If you do not yet own a Doodle Dragon image just wait till Friday's and get your Free one...free is great, right? But most single images in the store are only a buck or two...thats the cost of a kitchen sponge and we don't need sponges if we don't grow up.

Pike's Academy - Make a Bow

How about a little something from Pike Academy? Did you know every now and then we throw out a little tutorial? You can access them anytime by clicking on Pike's Academy on the left hand side of the blog. Here is a little tutorial on making a bow to "top off" that project you are making.

Don't just make them for cards...how about the center of flowers, or a 3D turkey tail feather or bunny butt....so many possibilities. Use less ribbon for thicker ribbons or smaller bows. Make the size smaller by wrapping the ribbon around 2 fingers or make it huge by wrapping 4. Play around with it...easy and fun!

Meet Yeddie and Works in Progress...

I am my own worst critic and a lot of the times I find mistakes with images that I just don't like...Things I would like to change...even after they are posted. Then like last night I get an idea for something that I really like and he actually comes out like I want him to...He name is Yeddie...

I have lived in Utah all my life with the exception of 3 years in Germany, and I have never once skiid or snowboarded. Ever, tubing and snowmobiling yes,
I could see him in books and joining the DoodleDragon Crew here shortly...Any writers out there want to give him a story we could turn into an ebook? Anyone else on the Doodle Crew as well, Dudley, Ollie the Monkey...

I am drawing to catch up, stay ahead and just stay on the task at hand, here are some other roughs...

Valentines, St Patrick's, and Easter all coming as well as catching up and finishing past months that I have been slacking on. I am adding the Calendar images as singles to the monthly stuff for those wanting them and even for those needing a re-arranged season calendar, working on an ebook as well as some more monthly goodies...

Freebies will be moving to Fridays, Wednesday is my CRAZY day between school, drill, dance and church I have 5 spare minutes on Wednesdays, it's even the eat out for dinner night or something realllllyy easy to make on Wednesdays...

I have had a few requests for digital images, so I have gone back to a few older sets and I am redoing them in Illustrator and saving them as transparent PNG as well as JPG images. Here is the first, I am keeping them on Etsy to keep the confusion level down for those buying the traditional DoodleDragon stuff and not wanting the illustrator drawn images.

HEY Look! I found Santa...

Ok, maybe not the real one, but it's one I carved and painted for my Wife for Christmas who recently decided to start collecting Santas for upstairs, kicking all my Disney Christmas stuff downstairs...weird that there's no snow in the background, not that I am complaining too much but I'd prefer snow in the Winter and not Spring like last year...

I am in no way the best woodcarver, but I think he turned out all right for a first try...

My kids had a Christmas Sing along at school today before their Christmas break and the dang Christmas song stuck in my head is "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" so from the song "see my hippo hero standing there" we get a hippo hero...

Don't ask me what an Elephant and a Hippo are doing fishing in the middle of a lake in a tiny wooden row boat, maybe it's the sitting in the wooden bleachers all day at a drill competition creeping into my head, or the feeling of being crammed into the space of 2, making room for 10 that got this in my head.

Anyways I am hoping they don't sink, And I was thinking Hippos might eat a fish when his mouth is opening to eat a water plant, but I am pretty sure it's not on the Elephants menu, unless he sucked one up drinking at the watering hole, maybe it's the relaxation of fishing, or maybe he wanted to get away with a friend? I don't fish, don't have the time or patience, maybe when I am older... but I don't eat fish, except the kind that come boxed up in a stick form all ready to cook. Thank you mister Gorton for fishing for me...

OK, so technically Illustration Friday for me has become Illustration Saturday. I have spent the past 2 days at my daughters school for Drill competition, and the season isn't even half over. BUT Santa brought me a present early this year and I present my Illustration done entirely on my new Ipad...

I have lots of sit on the bleacher time and my new little toy will make it so much better because I wont have to carry around a sketchbook and pencils, it's all on my Ipad... Not super clean but it was almost all drawn with my finger...The theme this week being Separated...Poor little bear...

It's that time again...this time I am messing around with coloring in Illustrator instead of Photoshop, I am including the Black N White version as well...

Delivering toys all around the around the world has gotta make you really hungry and I guess the satisfaction of making all those kids happy would be good enough, but a job with that little extra benefit always seems better, and what benefit is better than a tall glass of milk and warm cookies...I guess unless it's 4 billion glasses of milk and a LOT of cookies...

Tutorial - Building a Doodle Book

This tutorial was written by Veronica, one of my DoodleDragon Crew, and I thought I would share. We would love to see what you can do with it. Feel free to post a link to your creation!!

It seems to be getting that time of year when I need to have something little handy to distract my little monsters. Sometimes it is in the car, a doctor's office or even a break from an afternoon of boredom. Angry Birds only works for so long and then I have to resort to other measures. It has to be something small, portable (fits in my purse) and fun. What's more fun than a doodle book and a pouch of colored pencils? My girl monster loves it when I pull out a new doodle book for her coloring pleasure.

Doodle books are quick and easy to make, particularly when you snag a group of images like the 100 Days of Christmas special Dustin is offering up. Grab your images, load up Photoshop Elements and let's get busy! Don't have Photoshop Elements? You can download a free trial of the new version 10 from the Adobe Website (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=en_us&crosssell=selected )

I will be using Photoshop Elements 9 for this tutorial, so if you download the free trial, keep in mind that things might be in a different location.

Let's get started making Doodle Books! Start by creating a new file for your doodle book.

click FILE -> NEW

Set your Width, Height and Resolution. The resolution by default is 72, change this to 300. The files you download from the Doodle Dragon site are 300 pixels per inch (or DPI), so you want your starting resolution to be the same. When I'm making Doodle Books, I prefer my background to be white rather than the default transparent. You can go either way.

Choose a name for your file and click OK.

Now you have a nice blank page the size of a regular sheet of paper. To make a quarter page doodle book, I start by establishing some guides. Guides are lines that will appear in your file, allowing for easier layout of your images. These lines won't print.

Click View -> New Guide

First set a horizontal guide at 5.5

Click Okay.

Repeat the process to set a veritcal guide at 4.25

Your page is now divided into quarters

Your page should look like the image above. At this point you're ready to add your images. If you have never combined images into a single file, it is not as hard as it sounds. Start by opening the first four images from the 100 Days collection.

In the file for image 001, click Layer –> New –> Layer From Background.

Give the image a name. I used 001 so I could keep track of my images as I go along.

Click Ok.

The image in the LAYERS bar to the right will name change name from “background” to 001 (or whatever name you used.)

Now you're ready to drop your image into your doodle book file. Once again head back to Layer. This time, select Duplicate Layer.

The image name starts out as XXX copy until you select a file other than the one you are currently viewing. Once you select your Doodle Book file, the image will drop the “copy” moniker.

Select the doodle book file name you created at the beginning from the document drop down list and click OK.

Check out your Doodle Book file. There is image one in the upper left hand corner of the page.

Not an ideal location for binding, however. Click on the image and drag it so that it is centered in the square created by the grid lines. Remember to give yourself enough room at the top of the area to bind the book later on.

This image still looks a little small to me. Click on one of the corner boxes that appears when you click on the image. You'll see a box outline appear with a check mark and a circle. You are now ready to alter how your image appears. Just under the top bar, you have some new options.

W is width, H is height of course. Type in a number, any number and the image will resize by that percent. If you type in 25%, your image shrinks, type in 125% and the image grows. The 'Constrain Proportions' keeps the file square.

I adjusted to 125%. You can keep playing with the numbers here until you click either the green check mark to accept the settings, or the red circle to discard them.

Now that you have the file in place, repeat the steps to add in images 002, 003, and 004. Move the images to the spot on the grid by dragging them to the location you want them.

Check out image 004, of the snowman and the beaver. Does it look a off compared to the other images? Let's rotate it and fill the space a bit. There is no fast rule that every image has to be in the portrait orientation.

Click on the image. This time, we're going to adjust the rotation.

Rotation is done in degrees. Remember basic math? There are 360 degrees in a circle. To turn the image on its side, go 90 degrees.

Click the green check mark and the image rotates. Resize and rotate the other images as needed.

Print and trim. You have four Doodle Book pages! You have two options at this point, you can start at the beginning and repeat until you have the number of pages you want, or you can try out the magic of layers.

I mentioned the Layers box earlier when we were creating a layer from the background image. If you 'll notice down the right hand side of your Doodle Book file, there are five images listed now. The four 100 Days images and an image for the background. Let's build page two right in the same file. Open images 005 through 008 and add them to your Doodle Book file using the steps we've done above. Go on. I'll wait.

Ready? Do you have them all stacked up looking a bit like this?

That happens when all of your layers are visible. Doesn't work very nicely does is? Head on over to the Layers panel on the right.

In the Layers Panel, you'll find your list of images. The little thumbnail even shows where the image is sitting on the page. See the teensy little eyeball on the left? Click on it. The eyeball goes away and the image disappears from view in the file.

You still have the thumbnail in the Layers panel, but the image no longer appears and will not print. Go through and turn off images 001, 002, 003, and 004. Rearrange 005 through 008, resizing and rotating as you like. Your page should now look like this:

And you're ready to print another page.

Turn off 005 through 008.

Open images 009 through 012, add them to the file. Once again, rearrange, resize, rotate, print.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat. Keep it up until you have printed all the pages you want, or you run out of images for your doodle book. Don't forget to save the file as you go. Any time you want to reprint a page of images, or even the whole book, all you have to do is open the file and view/hide images until you have printed what you need.

Congratulations! You've learned many of the things you need to start combining images into a single file. We'll save binding our Doodle Books for another day.

Before we jump into freebie mode we would like to welcome CraftyGirl to the DoodleDragon DT. We are so happy to have her on our team! Be watching for her creativity along with the rest of the Doodle Crew. Here is a little about CraftyGirl as well as some of her favorite creations

Hi, I am CraftyGirl (not my given name). I am originally from New Jersey but now live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my loving husband for over 26 years. We have two basset hounds (Romeo & Juliet) and a black cat (Sir Die Hard). I think I was born crafting and come by it honestly since my Mom was the queen of crafts. She taught me most of what she knew and all of what I know about life and crafts. I love working with paper. My hobbies include: Card Making, origami, tea bag folding, beading, polymer clay, crocheting, ham radio, balloon animals and so much more.

Dustin’s fabulous artwork moved me away from rubber stamps and onto digi stamps (easier to store). His blog and the Design Team Members keep me inspired and led me to create my own blog and start a monthly card making class in February of this year.

What a great honor to be asked to be the newest Design Team Member at Doodle Dragons Studio’s. It is like Christmas came early this year!!!

For those wanting to Digitize my art and sell the Embroidery files or products made with my art I am starting to sell those files in a section on my site labeled "Embroidery". Purchasing a file there gives you the rights to digitize the file and sell a version compatible with embroidery machines, or you may digitize at home and make products to sell as well. I still retain all the rights to my art. IF the art is not in the Embroidery section it may NOT be digitized and sold. Also these are not exclusive licenses, I am selling the rights to more than one person, So if it's really important to you to be the first one to digitize my stuff and get it out there before the others keep an eye on my site and my blog...I am starting with my Christmas in July stuff, adding them as they are ready to go...Also I am selling the files for $5 dollars per image, this gets you the image and the permission to digitize, this is a trial basis price, the price could change at any time.

If there is art not in the embroidery section you'd like to use please let me know. I just might have not gotten to it, OR it might not be available for digitizing

Busy, Busy, busy...

With only 12 days til my 10 month vacation starts (school will be in) I have had a lot going on here in the past few weeks. I had a 15 page book to illustrate and a 10 page one as well that I am working on right now. I am finishing July (yes I got a little behind ) and working on August as well. I will have some new stuff a little later on and just a friendly reminder for those placing orders on my site. When you place an order there should be an email sent instantly with the links to your downloads. Sometimes the email is lost, other times it gets rejected by your provider, IF this is the case and you don't receive an email ALL orders are listed under your "order history" which can be found by logging in on my site with your info and download away. ALSO... the links expire in 72 hrs, IF you don't get to the download before then just send me an email and I will reset the link. And lastly I try to answer emails the same day, sometimes the next day atleast but I do have other things going on besides constantly sitting at my computer. So please be patient with email answers...

We are going to have a fabulous time this week with our new challenge!!! Before we get to the challenge I wanted to tell you that we are changing up the Challenge rules a bit. I am going to hold off on the Pikes Points system for a while and go back to the "Winners get an image". The good news is you can enter as many times as you want again. I want to spend my time drawing more images for you instead of trying to make sure everyone has gotten their points for the store. You want more images right? So, lets get back to playing already!!

This weeks challenge is GIRL POWER. Using one of my images create something a little bit girly, or a lot girly...that is up to you.

My DoodleDragon Crew has come up with some fantastic creations to give you some inspiration. Somehow each one has used some form of pink (go figure!)

Playground Rules:

Choose a Doodle Dragon Studios image and create a Girly themed card or project.
Directly link the actual card/project using InLinkz (below).
You may submit as many cards or projects you want as long as they are made for this challenge.

This week its all about animals and you know I have a lot available, so this should be an easy one! Color up one of my animal images and make something exciting with it. Link it below and then color some more for fun.

So....With Drill team getting me up EVERY day in June at 5:30 AM I am taking the month of July Off......There is no drill for July and I will be taking a break with my kids...5:30 is too early I don't mind mornings, I am not one of those non-morning people but 7 is a better wake-up hour...

Jenn might be still hosting the challenges. BUT I won't be adding points for July. If you'd like you can email me August 1st and have me check the month for entries and I can add points then, but I won't be adding them weekly as you enter the challenges...

Speaking of Challenges. IF you enter the challenge using a non-Doodledragonstudios image, your entry will be deleted and you will not receive points for playing along, Please make a note of that. They will be deleted. Only DoodleDragonStudios images are allowed on the challenges...

Monthly Members, I am finishing June, and I have half of July, August and September done. For the Yearly members I will have those links up before July. No not Labor pain exercises. Schooooolll is Ouuttttt...... Wooohhooooooo. No more driving to schools 3 times a day. No waking up before...Ok wait we are on drill team so we will be waking up before the crack of dawn all summer....So anyways now time to catch up. May members art is up. coloring as we speak, I have sketched out all of June and will be adding those this weekend...This weeks freebie is late but better late than never.

I took the first batch of about 150 cards Over to Dylan's house this past Sunday and spent over 2 and a half hours with a very amazing family. The Shaw family is sooooo cool. Dylan read each card, asked about them, asked me if it was my art or not, we talked about everything and just hung out with a very awesome kid and family. I have a few more cards that have made their way here since then so I will be getting them to him after they have time to settle back in. I personally want to thank each and everyone who took the time out of their daily craziness to make a card and make a little boy smile. Thank you sooooooo much...
